Matt Smith (b.1984) studied flute with Ian Clarke, Phillipa Davis and Sarah Newbold, piccolo with Sharon Williams and composition with Adam Melvin at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he graduated in 2007. Before starting at the Guildhall he attended Queen Elizabeth’s School, Barnet where he studied with Simon Walton. He was a member of the London Schools Symphony Orchestra and also attended the junior school of the GSMD.

Since leaving the GSMD he now freelances as a player where he plays for various shows and ensembles and has recorded for TV and Radio. He also works for Hertfordshire Music Service in different roles. These include teaching, playing in the Live Music in Schools programme as part of a quartet and also tutoring the Hertfordshire County Wind Sinfonia flute section. He also plays with the Kariosa chamber ensemble. Matt plays on a Brannen Cooper flute and an Anton Braun piccolo.

Matt has composed since he was fifteen and in 2006 his Sonata No.1 for piccolo and piano was added to the Trinity Guildhall exam syllabus for Grades 7 and 8 flute which lead to a publishing contract with United Music Publishers (UMP). Since then a further piccolo sonata followed which was first performed in the United States by Dr Christine Beard during the 1st international piccolo symposium at the University of Nebraska. Dr Beard is recording both Sonatas on her debut CD entitled ‘Souvenirs: 21st Century works for piccolo’ which is scheduled for release at the end of 2009 and is also giving the National Flute Association premiere of Sonata No.2 for Piccolo and Piano at the 20009 NFA convention in New York. Matt is currently working on a Sonata for Flute and is always looking for different instruments and ensembles to write for.
